The son asks questions and clarifies steps. They share this poignant moment of generational closeness — cooking together, chopping together, simmering together, chatting, setting the table… …until it becomes clear they’ve been speaking over video call the entire time. The son is making his mother’s borscht in a house near the Zaporizhzhia front line, while the mother is in Poltava. He calls his fellow soldiers to the table and thanks his mom.
