Bolsheviks aim to set their rules on the lands of the Western Ukraine repeatedly occupied by them. UPA - the partisan army - resists their policy. The civilian population becomes a hostage of this war "without rules", and above all – relatives of the insurgents. Invaders and their allies cruelly torture the Ukrainian people, but the struggle continues. Irritated, "bolshevists" start evicting people to Siberia. UPA tries to prevent this action, but the forces are not equal. Insurgents can only take revenge and punish the executioners.

At Amsterdam's Film Museum, film directors, students, and film researchers and archivists look at the moving images and discuss their meaning, in the social and technical contexts. They take temporary refuge in an empty building, and there she has a chance meeting with her ex-fiancé. He offers to put her up--that is, hide her--for a few days. He's now married, a professional who lives in an idyllic suburb reached by a trolley that runs through the woods. His wife seems more committed to putting up the fugitive than he is. The story involves the neighbors, the building owner who avoids involvement and seeks solace in classic poetry, and the super and his suspicious wife.

Xindi followed his lover Shen Fang to rescue the wounded in the temporary hospital. In order to curry favor with the Japanese army, Luo Kai did not hesitate to sacrifice his eldest daughter Wangdi. However, not long after he became a traitor, his second daughter Xindi was attracted by a Japanese military officer. Luo Kai finally couldn't bear to fight against Wangdi to stop him. In the chaos...

Following the tally-ho of the SS, a barbaric manhunt begins. Only very few fugitives survive. With a lot of good luck, the two young officers Michail and Nikolai reach the Karner family's farm. Frau Karner persuades her husband to hide the two escapees.
