Meanwhile, Tamotsu is a small club's pianist in Yokohama. Ritsuko, close to the age of marriage, is worried and forms a concrete plan. Ritsuko's sister, Kinue, arranges for her to meet her husbands colleague Abe Goro. Tamotsu and Ritsuko wind up quarreling on their date the following day where Tamotsu eventually promises to meet her father. When the witch discovers their friendship and bond, she was on the verge of destroying him, but Hsiao-Hseuh pleads for his life in exchange for their separation. After being back in the custody of the witch queen, Hsiao-Hseuh sneaks out and reunites with Chih-Chiu, but posing as a different person to hide her identity.

He imagines speakers reading annual reports to show the Institute's progress over the year, and, perhaps, a bit of serious music, something from the Classics, played by the Veterans' Orchestra. Obviously, no one wants to change the program a few hours before the show, much less to replace it with something so boring! Now everyone has to team up in order to prevent Ogurtsov from getting to the stage. As some of them trap Ogurtsov one way or another, others perform their scheduled pieces and celebrate New Year's Eve.
