    Doktor Faust

    2006

Faust - a lonely scholar, despairing of life, who has so far failed to discover its highest meaning - is given a book on black magic from three mysterious students from Cracow. When Mephistopheles appears and proposes a pact with Faust, the two of them set off together on a (dream) journey. Doktor Faust remained a fragment at the time of the composer's death. Busoni died in 1924, unable to complete what he himself described as his "state masterpiece" - an opera to which he had a deep personal attachment. The missing scenes from the score were completed by his pupil, Philipp Jarnach, whom Busoni had become acquainted with during his period in exile in Zurich. In this form the opera was given its first performance in Dresden in 1925. Then in the 1980s the conductor Anthony Beaumont came across previously undiscovered sketches by Busoni and produced a new version of Doktor Faust. The current recording uses the Jarnach score.

Appearing on the RAINBOW QUEST television show--which was helmed by Pete Seger in the 1960s--so-called "neo-folk" band The New Lost City Ramblers perform here. A retro act before the term was even coined, John Cohen's band looked backwards for inspiration, and found much to love in the distinctly old fashioned sound of old- time string bands. The unclassifiable Greenbriar Boys also put in a good showing, weaving their inimitable magic that encompasses elements of country, blues, and bluegrass styles.

  • Mastodon: Live at Brixton

    Mastodon: Live at Brixton

    2013

If Mastodon never get around to a greatest hits package, Live at Brixton will do the trick. Captured at a February 2012 gig in London, Brixton finds the Georgia prog-sludge mainstays barreling through 23 choice cuts from their five good-to-classic LPs, 2002's Remission through 2011's The Hunter, a typically remarkable performance from a band whose live prowess rivals their in-studio wizardry. Like most overviews, the song selection's arguable, the impact of even the highest highs altered in their uprooting. But Brixton does the same rep-cementing, catalog-calcifying work a good hits comp is supposed to, further solidifying Mastodon's spot among the greatest big-ticket metal bands going.
