    Paul McCartney: In Red Square

    2003

    star 5.5
For the Russian audience, McCartney's appearance in Moscow is little short of a miracle. The Beatles were banned for decades by the Soviet government, which regarded their music as the epitome of Western decadence and propaganda, and the fans' only access to the group was through the occasional photo or black market album. Their reaction to his 2003 visit is a mixture of frenzy and rapture.

The release marks yet another occasion on which the four actors Søren Pilmark, Niels Olsen, Asger Reher, and Henrik Koefoed have elevated bawdiness to a higher level. It contains a beautifully varied two-hour show with a brand new Western theme, featuring Niels Olsen in suspenders and fishnet stockings as General Custer, lodge sketches with the brotherhood, Fjærtoman, Asger Reher performing a spectacular stunt in alternative farts, and four-part singing from the four brothers, who totally knock the audience out with barely concealed bawdy innuendos.

The tour is often considered one of the best comebacks in music history. The 180-date, eleven-month world tour traveled across Europe, North America and Australasia. Notably, Turner played a show in Budapest, Hungary, the only show of the tour behind the Iron Curtain. The concerts received many accolades, including the "Most Creative Tour Package" and "Comeback Tour Of The Year" awards from Pollstar. The two March 1985 shows at Birmingham, England's NEC Arena were filmed and released as Tina Live: Private Dancer Tour. It featured special guests Bryan Adams and David Bowie. In 2025 a 4K upgraded blu ray of the concert came out, including bonus video clips.

The audio was then digitally mixed at Le Studio in Morin Heights, Quebec, where Moving Pictures, Permanent Waves, and Signals were recorded and mixed. The result, the Exit...Stage Left movie (a different performance than that found on the live Exit...Stage Left album), represents one hour of highlights from Rush's two hour stage show, visualizing material from their albums Moving Pictures, Permanent Waves, Hemispheres, and A Farewell to Kings.
