Violet De Ray opens up a barber shop at Roaring Gulch. Violet not only does a ripping good business, but she unconsciously has a hand in hurrying along several matrimonial affairs which have hung fire. This is notably the case with Si, who has loved bashfully and at a respectable distance for years. He is lured into Violet's shop, and after his chin whiskers have been clipped he emerges elated; and this coupled with Mandy's desire to protect him from such evil influences, cements a long drawn out romance.
Carmenita is the daughter of a Mexican innkeeper and is loved by all. One day two young Mexican ruffians enter and make vulgar love to her, much to her dislike, when Frank Dougherty, a young cowpuncher enters, and protects her.
A band of robbers are playing cards in the foreground of the picture. Suddenly one of the gang who has been on the lookout for the stage coach rides up in great haste. They quickly dodge behind a clump of trees and lay in wait. Soon the coach appears and is stopped by the bandits. The occupants are compelled to come down from their hiding places at the point of the gun and after being relieved of their valuables, are allowed to continue on their way. As soon as the stage drives off the robbers make for their ponies and take to the woods.
The punchers of the XL outfit are wild with joy, 'cause Mary, the idol of the ranch, is comin' home from college. Billy James is Mary's special friend, and goes to bring her from the station, but, suffering snakes! Look what's traveling with her, his nobs, "Sir Percy Granville," who owns the nearby ranch. This gets Bill's goat for a time, but Mary rides and "ropes" with the punchers, and soon shows them she is the same genuine, good-hearted Mary, and doesn't care a whoop for Sir Percy. Sir Percy insists on sticking around, however, and shows his true nature by striking Mary's younger brother, Bobby, when he defends his sister from insult.
A half a million dollars has been stolen and stashed away and prison inmate Dutch knows where it is. So Government Agent Joe goes to prison and makes friends with Dutch. When Joe breaks them out, Dutch leads them to the money only to find it gone. But Dutch's old gang is on hand and they haven't found it either.
Cowpoke Magpie desires marriage thinking the way to go is to write to a matrimonial agency but his buddy, Dirtyshirt finally dissuades him. However, to get even with him when they have a disagreement, he mails the agency one of the touching missives Magpie has written and filed away. It elicits a tremendous response, and the would-be brides descend upon Magpie all from the same stagecoach. Meantime he and Dirtyshirt have fallen in love with the new girl at the local store. The applicants, however, will not be denied, and pursue Magpie vigorously. Dirtyshirt and Magpie, each unknown to the other, propose to the new girl at the store and advance her the necessary money to bring her mother West. Each is to meet her at the office of the Justice of the Peace at four o'clock in the afternoon. The two arrive there at the same time only to see the fair damsel emerging with the dashing local haberdasher.
The android E-Lena is about to embark on her greatest adventure yet. The search for her unknown creator takes her on a journey through time to the Wild West. Not long after arriving, her bounty is hunted all over town.
The first, and apparently only, surviving film produced by the Colorado Motion Picture Company, Pirates of the Plains is a quite well-made story about two brothers, one a champion rodeo rider, the other a horse thief.
